As The Crow Flies
Stephen Fearing ©2012
Driving through the dead of night
A hundred miles on one headlight
Moving on
At times you can’t see what’s up ahead
But you make your choice and you make your bed
Moving on
Try to heal the things you’ve broken
The words you left unspoken
Learn to say goodbye
And wait for when the moment’s golden
Then choose the hand that opens
Straight as the crow flies
Moving on
With the best of intentions you can lose the day
But you get back up and on your way
Moving on
‘Cause people talk and they tell you lies
They flap their lips right before your eyes
Moving on
Rising from the ash and the dust
You turn the key from hope to trust
And all those hurtful things that were said
Are in the past now look ahead

Gold On The River
Stephen Fearing © 2019
Well I ran so fast for years
I thought the price was tears and running was the key
I looked for love and comfort everywhere
I learned to stare but I never learned to see
I was playing some casino and there you were
Beside the spinning wheel of fortune
My rhinestone girl
When I was young and innocent
I mostly felt just awkward and naïve
I wanted to be older
With my coat slung on my shoulder, heart on my sleeve
When I finally found the stillness in myself
I started wondering
Just how many years were left upon the shelf
Time paints a lullaby
With gold out on the river
‘Til the rivers run dry
Time is a long goodbye
It’s a taker and a giver
It’s a slow dance and we all want more time
We made love among the ruins
We made music out of all that history
We found joy as the summer waned
And winter blew the leaves off of the trees
We measured all the sweetness that we found
Against the bitter times of waiting
‘Til the good times came around
Heaven is a feeling
It’s a peaceful Sunday morning cup of tea
It’s my shelter from the storm
When I know the storm is waiting for me
When I’m far away and down to the bone
Trying to sing my way to heaven
Trying to get back home

Christine

Christine my rodeo queen
Christine my rodeo queen
She got a heart full of soul, a soul full of gasoline
I was sleeping on the couch
I was eating humble pie
Until I learned to see the things
She’s saying with her eyes
My woman’s like a teabag
You throw her in the pot
But you never know how strong she gets
Until the water’s hot
She’s my coffee
I’ll tell you why
Enough caffeine
To make a dead man fly
When I think about the gals
That I knew before
She got real the fireworks
Start the third world war
Christine, Christine
Christine,Christine
She got a heart full of soul, a soul full of gasoline
She love me like a river
She love me like the rain
I was dying in the desert like a dog on a chain
Christine

She got a heart full of soul a soul full of gasoline
She’s my coffee
I’ll tell you why
Enough caffeine
To make a dead man fly
When I think about the gals
That I knew before

Someone Else’s Shoes
Stephen Fearing © 2019
Outside the world is crying
Breaks my heart in two
‘Cause no-one is an island
When you walk in someone else’s shoes
We don’t really see each other
We don’t even trust the truth
It’s the old divide and conquer
Eye for an eye and tooth for tooth
Heaven help the privileged ones
Who never felt the blues
‘Cause you won’t find the road to love
‘Til you walk in someone else’s shoes
Walk in someone else’s shoes

Sunny
Stephen Fearing © 2019
Sunny came down to the city
Getting gone was the only way she knew
Far from the whispers and the rumours
What else was a small-town kid to do
Found a place out on the east side
Just a room at The Sugarland Motel
You could call it lost if you wanted
Sunny called it trying to find yourself
Sunny’s Dad was one hard ticket
Mother was a hard ticket’s wife
Spent most of her days keeping her head down
Getting on with her hard ticket life
She said Sunny just as long as I can remember
You were born a mystery to me
A little boy standing on the corner
Of who you are and who you want to be
And here I got some money I’ve been saving
Take it now before I change my mind
Take it now for every year I’ve been slaving
It might help to pay for the life you hope to find
The vale of truth is a thorny ramble
You got to walk that lonesome road all by yourself
But heaven help the desperate soul who gambles
On living their whole life as someone else
Me and Sunny been together since the Autumn
We take each season one day at a time
‘Cause I believe that you smoke ‘em if you got ‘em
You live the life that makes you whole inside

Better Than Good
Stephen Fearing ©2016
How many lives have you begun
How many times around the sun
How many people met you
Swore they never could forget you
How many tales have you believed
Only to find you’ve been deceived
I know that when I saw you
I was wondrous strange in love
Good
Better than good together
The picture that you showed me
When I met you
Good
Better than good together
Hang it on the wall right where we stood
Better than good
We flipped a coin above the well
It hung in silence then it fell
Beneath this dull façade
Straight to my silver heart
Talking all night across the wire
The dawn was golden with desire
I packed what I could carry
And gave the rest away
Good
Better than good together
The picture that you showed me
When I met you
Good
Better than good together
Hang it on the wall right where we stood
Better than good

Early Morning Rain
Gordon Lightfoot ©1964
In the early morning rain
With a dollar in my hand
With an aching in my heart
And my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home
Lord I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain
With no place to go
Out on runway number nine
A big 707 set to go
I'm stuck here in the grass
Where the cold wind blows
Now the liquor tasted good
And the women all were fast
Well there she goes my friend
She’s rolling down at last
Hear the mighty engines roar
See the silver bird on high
She's away and westward bound
Far above the clouds she'll fly
Where the morning rain don't fall
And the sun always shines
She'll be flying over my home
In about three hours’ time
This old airport's got me down
It's no earthly good to me
‘Cause I'm stuck here on the ground
As cold and drunk as I can be
You can't jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain
